What is good news? When I heard it, I couldn't believe it. Finally, a new system for the detection of breast cancer has been created, which represents an advance in the area of gynecology and in what refers to breast cancer that only in Spain affects more than 15 thousand women a year . 'Mammi', as this new system was baptized, is capable of identifying tumors as small as the head of a pin.

The advantages of this new mammography system are enormous. Apart from being able to diagnose breast cancer up to a year before the equipment currently used, Mammi as well:

- It will reduce false positives, that is, cases that end up being misdiagnosed.

- It will end with the crushing or longitudinal and distal compression of the breasts, and therefore, with the annoying pain and suffering.

- It will have a stretcher with two holes so that the woman, once lying face down, can insert both breasts, which remain hanging

- It will have less irradiation

- When hanging the chest by the force of gravity, a ring is adjusted to the base of the breast and to the ribs, which allows to detect if there are tumors also in this area.

- Offers safer detection of a possible tumor.

It is expected that with this new technology the survival rate of breast cancer can reach 100 percent, by detecting the tumor at a very early stage. Of the 200 existing types of cancer, the one that causes the highest mortality among women is breast cancer, especially among those between 35 and 54 years of age. Around 400 thousand women die from breast cancer annually in the world.

For this reason, early detection is the best way to reduce this mortality. An early diagnosis of cancer can reduce it by more than 80 percent. Mammi is a project that has been carried out by scientists from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, the Higher Council for Scientific Research, the Center for Environmental Energy Research and Technologies and the Institute of Biomechanics of Valencia, in collaboration with European research centers, within of the "Fighting Cancer of the European Union" program.

When my daughter is old enough to have a mammogram or breast x-ray, she will surely suffer much less than I do. I am happy for her and for all women, who from 40 years of age, have to do a mammogram periodically.
